Growing up in Oklahoma, it wasn’t too rare that travel of some kind took my family to Texas. My brother used to play competitive soccer and sometimes they attended tournaments in Dallas, TX. My dad also travelled to Houston, TX, for work. And there’s one restaurant that stands out in my mind whenever I think of these Texan adventures – Saltgrass Steakhouse.
It’s exactly what it sounds like – an amazing steakhouse! While I can’t remember what I ate each time I went, I know I had the best coconut shrimp and a steak that was to die for!
The best part about Saltgrass Steakhouse? They have their ungodly amazing steak seasoning available for purchase! (Ok, I’m unsure if they still do this in the restaurants, but you can buy it online from Amazon & TexJoy) When I moved into my first apartment, my parents bought me a nice large jar of it 🙂
Funny thing is, I’ve yet to use the seasoning on steak! I know, crazy. That’s not saying I haven’t been using my Saltgrass though – I use it on pulled pork. And I promise, it will be one of the best (if not THE best) pulled porks you’ve had in your life!
This again I got from my mom – she’s awesome! Anyways, it’s one of the easiest recipes to make because you let your oven do ALL THE WORK! As long as you plan ahead and put the pork in before noon (so it can cook long, low, and slow), be prepared for a dinner everyone will talk about!
This pulled pork has a nice smokey flavor (without use of a smoker – win!) accented with pops of salt and spice. The meat itself is so so so tender after cooking for 6 hours. Just try to resist the urge to eat it as finger food!
What’s fun about this pulled pork recipe though is because it’s just a spice rub, and no sauce, the meat itself is pretty versatile. My go-to dinner is the classic pulled pork sandwich. If you can get your hands on some Dink’s Barbeque sauce, do it! This is my favorite barbeque sauce I’ve ever had! Sadly, California is really far away from both of their locations (Bartlesville, OK, and Bentonville, AR), but according to their website, I can get it shipped:
Our Sauce
We hesitate to brag about our sauce, but honesty dictates that we tell you it’s unchanged over the years, widely imitated and never duplicated, and shipped by request all over the United States.
Happy barbeque dance time!
If you aren’t in the mood for a full sandwich, Nick and I recently learned how to make homemade bread (don’t worry, a post will be coming soon about that!), and this pulled pork is delicious atop a freshly baked slice of bread. Think of this as your fancy restaurant-style appetizer look for dinner!
A third yummy way to enjoy pulled pork is in tacos. I like to top mine with lettuce, cheese, and salsa. Probably any of your favorite taco toppings would be great with the pork though because it’s savory delicious meat! The flavor profile could end up anywhere you like!
Here’s the recipe: Saltgrass Pulled Pork
I just made this the other day! Great minds….. 😃 I still have saltgrass, but made it will a new spice combo! 😯 We got spices from Savory Spice Shop (wonderful business) in Fort Collins, CO, I used two in combination and it was equally amazing! And the versatitlty is still there! Oh the possibilities…..😋
